Konrad No. 2 Shaft - Driving of openings next to the shaft
As part of the conversion of the Konrad mine to a permanent disposal site for radioactive waste, DBE commissioned the 'Schacht Konrad 2' consortium, consisting of REDPATH DEILMANN and Thyssen Schachtbau GmbH (ASK2) to not only convert the decommissioned shaft, but also to drive the associated workings next to the shaft.

In particular, these workings next to the shaft involved the following projects:
- Landing upgrade stretch (FOE)
- Branch to the FOE/ETS connection
- Northern storage transport stretch (ETS)
All three of these projects require working under complex geological conditions with rock masses exerting a lot of pressure, with the sites laid out in accordance with monitoring class 2 under DIN 1045-3.
The FOE and the ETS North were driven in a four-shift operation and a number of new machines from the world of tunnelling were acquired in order to make progress.
