As part of the construction of a repository for radioactive waste materials with negligible heat generation in the former Konrad iron ore mine in Salzgitter, mine rooms were built or extended for the infrastructure required for storage operations.

The pit areas to be excavated for backfill processing are located in the 2nd and 3rd levels and were excavated from existing drifts.

  • Production of pit rooms for backfill processing
  • New excavations and re-cutting work in existing pits
  • Excavation of a bunker and construction of a ventilation borehole
  • Driveway turning point with washing area
  • Recutting a section of a track on the 2nd level
  • Construction of a ventilation borehole between the 2nd and 3rd level

  • Seiger bunker with a depth of approx. 15 m and an excavation diameter of approx. 5.9 m using the raise boring method

Special features

  • All excavations were built in a way that protects the rock; the excavation was based on the excavation concept of the New Austrian Tunneling Method
  • Installation of a double-shell, compliant lining system due to the expected rock mass convergences
  • Installation after a convergence time of at least 12 months to be taken into account
