Our decades of experience, our know-how and our expertise characterize every phase of project implementation. For 135 years, we have been shaping the future of mining and shaft construction and setting international standards with innovative solutions.

1888-1924
Foundation and early years

In 1888, at the age of 22, Carl Deilmann founded C. Deilmann Bergbau-Unternehmung in Dortmund. The company expands in 1906 with the acquisition of the company premises in Dortmund-Kurl. In 1924, Deilmann begins using the freeze shaft method, a pioneering innovation in mining.

1925-1960
International breakthrough and expansion

In 1925, the freeze shaft method is used successfully for the first time in Russia. Deilmann uses this method in two shafts in Solikamsk in the Urals. In the 1950s, Deilmann develops into a specialized mining company with an international focus. In the 1960s, the company employs 5,000 people worldwide.

1962-1967
Innovations

In 1962, Jim Redpath founds J.S. Redpath Limited in Noranda, Quebec, Canada. Three years later, Redpath sinks the deepest surface shaft in North America and becomes a leading shaft sinking company.

Construction of the Auguste Victoria 8 shaft begins in 1963. It is the first shaft in the world to be built with a steel-concrete composite lining and asphalt backfill. This construction method sets new standards in mining and increases the safety and efficiency of shaft construction.

1968-1997
Mergers and expansion

In 1968, Deilmann merged with Haniel & Lueg GmbH to form Deilmann-Haniel GmbH. In the 1970s, the company introduces tunnel boring machines in coal mining for the first time, which significantly increases efficiency in mining. In the late 1990s, Deilmann-Haniel becomes increasingly international and specializes in specialist mining work.

1997-2009
Realignment in mining

In 1997, Deilmann-Haniel strengthens its strategic focus on the international specialty mining business. The takeover of the Canadian company J.S. Redpath gives the company access to North American mining and expands its expertise in ore mining. In 2009, Deilmann-Haniel develops a new shaft lining concept for water pressures of up to 10.5 MPa. This concept, which consists of a tightly welded sheet steel casing, concrete and bolted steel inner armoring, is successfully used in the Canadian potash mining project PCS Scissors Creek. It enables the construction of shafts under extreme conditions and contributes to increased efficiency and safety in mining.

In 2006, ATON GmbH takes over the international division of Deilmann-Haniel GmbH, consisting of the shaft construction division, Deilmann-Haniel mining systems, J.S. Redpath, Frontier-Kemper (USA), Deilmann-Haniel South Africa and Beton- und Monierbau in Innsbruck.

2010-2016
Major orders and integration in Redpath

In 2011, Deilmann-Haniel receives a major order to build two freeze shafts for Uralkali in Russia. ATON GmbH integrates Deilmann-Haniel into the J.S. Redpath Group in 2012, strengthening the company's global presence. This integration brings together international resources and positions Deilmann-Haniel as a leading company in the specialist mining business.

2017-2024
Renaming and recent major projects

In 2017, Deilmann-Haniel is awarded a major contract for the construction of two freeze shafts in Belarus. This is the first project in Europe in which shafts of this size are sunk purely mechanically with an SBR shaft boring machine from Herrenknecht AG. In 2019, Deilmann-Haniel GmbH is renamed REDPATH DEILMANN GmbH. 2021 The company takes over the shaft sinking work for the three shafts of the Anglo-American Woodsmith Mine in England. 2023 REDPATH DEILMANN celebrates its 135th anniversary. A major project in 2024 is the construction of two shafts for the "Südlink" project in Heilbronn.
