Autazes mine

Trade-off study on sinking two new deep shafts | SBR vs. conventional shaft sinking

Client

Brazil Potash Corp.

Location

Autazes, Brazil

Execution period

April 2022

until 2023

The aim of the project was to carry out a trade-off study to select the optimum method for sinking two shafts in Brazil. The focus was on the comparison between the conventional sinking method and mechanical sinking using a Shaft Boring Roadheader (SBR). The results of the study show that mechanical sinking with the Herrenknecht SBR offers significant advantages in terms of schedule, cost structure and project risks. At the same time, it is concluded that the conventional drill & blast method is still an economically viable alternative.

The Autazes mine in Brazil is to be built for the production of Potash, a fertilizer.

Project details

Scope of work

  • Preparation of a trade-off analysis for two shafts of the planned Autazes mine in the Brazilian Amazon region.
  • Comparison of the conventional drilling and blasting method and the mechanized Herrenknecht Shaft Boring Roadheader (SBR)
  • The focus was on the overall time, investment costs and technical differences between the two methods.
Risks, execution time and plannability in a geologically challenging environment were also assessed.

Technical data at a glance

  • Ventilation shaft: final depth 865.75 m and diameter 6.9 m
  • Main shaft: final depth 905.9 m and diameter 7.8 m
